This is related to my presentation, stuff I said, and an update
So while Maine voters decided that not all people deserve rights, the voters in Washington felt differently (yay!) so here is an article about that:
http://www.sovo.com/2009/11-13/news/national/10871.cfm
and this is what happened in Maine which is what I talked about.
Yes on One
-Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland
-Maine Jeremiah Project
-National Organization for Marriage
-Maine Marriage Initiative
-Daughters of Isabella (Named after Queen Isabella I of Castile (spain), wife of King Ferdinand of Aragon and mother of Queen Katherine of Aragon (1st wife of Henry VIII), grandmother of Queen Mary I aka Bloody Mary. Queen Isabella and her husband lead the inquisition which effectively killed/exiled all the Jews and Muslims from Spain. Her "daughters" (well not so much Katherine because all Katherine did was whine and then die, but Mary decided to kill a bunch of protestants. Just saying... they really should have thought of how offensive this name was before chosing it!)
-Knights of Columbus
-Concerned Women of America, Maine Chapter
-Maine Coalition of Concerned Families
-Eagle Forum
-Family Watch International
-Marriage 4 Maine
No on 1
-Americans for Democratic Action
-AFL/CIO
-American Academy of Pediatrics- Maine Chapter
-American Association of University Women (AAUW)
-America Civil Liberties Union
-Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence
-Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere
-Downeast Pride Alliance
The main donaters to the No on 1 campaign were
Human Rights Campaign $155,000
Equality Maine (who I volenteered for senior year ^_^) $90,000
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders $87,000
National Gay and Lesbain Task Force $75,000
American Civil Liberties Union $10,000
the voter turn out was 54%, there were 504,919 total voters. 266,324 (52.75%) voted yes, 238,595 (47.25%) voted no.
