Ugandan Bill On HIV

In case anyone missed my presentation I guess I’ll just give a brief summary. There is a new bill in Uganda posing to create harsher policies about HIV/AIDS. The bill proposes criminalizing the transmission of HIV, making everyone who has HIV/AIDS register so that their disease becomes public knowledge, and possibly giving the government a means to “prosecute people in selective or abusive ways.”

Here’s the link for the article in case you want to check it out. http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/11/06/uganda-bill-threatens-progress-hivaids

Personally, I think the bill would further alienate those with HIV/AIDS and definitely should not be passed. I think it’s especially ridiculous that “Women who transmit HIV to their infants after birth via breast milk would also be subject to criminal prosecution” What do you guys think?

  1. I think this bill is horrible. I do not think that passing this will prevent the spread of HIV. The technique that they are using is that used for Pedophiles and Sex Offenders. People afflicted with HIV/AIDS are not the former nor the latter. This bill is unfair and extremely discriminatory seeing as one does not choose to have HIV/AIDS.

  2. This bill will not in a million year prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. People lie, hide things, or are just ignorant to the fact that they have it. Some of the symptoms of HIV/AIDS also can be similar to those of other illnesses, so people who don't even have HIV/AIDS could still be prosecuted for this, and if this is done, then it would just continue this "genocidal - turmoil" that Uganda has been experiencing.
