Why are immigrants dying in government institutions in New England?

So it's easy to judge foreign countries for their unjust treatment of people, but what's going on in our own neck of the woods? Well, immigrants who get detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have an odd habit of dying because they are denied medical care. Juan Pedro Tavarez is the most recent case.

Here's the story in the Boston Globe.

The ACLU has been reporting on this case. They write:

Mr. Tavarez' death brings to at least 105 the number of known deaths in ICE custody since 2003, including the death of Vincent Murphy in Boston in 2006. Then, ICE found that his death was a result of a heart condition, despite the fact that other detainees had reported that Murphy "was coughing blood" and notified staff of his illness, who were "not willing to listen."
