It follows the story of two women, Laurel, a police lieutenant who is terminally ill with cancer, and her domestic partner Stacie. We watch as they desperately fight the local authorities of Ocean County, New Jersey, in order to gain the rights that straight couples take for granted. If Laurel dies before the laws are changed, the pension she earned for 25 years of civic service, will not be transferred to Stacie. After watching this, it seems almost impossible for anyone to believe that gay couples don't deserve these basic human rights.
Also on the Freeheld website is a virtual map of the U.S. displaying the different laws and regulations that each state upholds (updated April, 2009). There is a lot of work that still needs to be done!

This was a very powerful trailer, and hopefully this inspires people to act to give the same rights to gay couples as heterosexuals. I think that this is a good addition to the campaign for rights for gays.

ReplyDeleteIt is pretty ridiculous that States would pass laws saying that homosexuals do not receive the same rights as heterosexuals. I know that the U.S. isn't as extreme as other countries, which makes me happy, but if we are suppose to be a refuge for those seeking asylum, don't you think that the U.S. will be completely pro same sex marriage and other activities like pension plans?
